elopement the green cornwall

I recently shared some words of wisdom from Debs Ivelja, a super talented wedding photographer who specialises in capturing romantic elopements (she also happens to come highly recommended as part of our Pasties & Petticoats Wedding Collective).

Elopements are such an intimate affair, it’s even more important to make sure you choose a photographer who can tell your wedding story in a non intrusive way.  Debs has a wealth of experience and knowledge when it comes to eloping, so do check out her advice if you’re planning on escaping to our pretty part of the world to say I do.

In the meantime, have a peek at Chris and Alison’s intimate elopement at The Green Cornwall (another highly recommended wedding collective member!). A gorgeous venue tucked away the sweeping contours of Bodmin Moor, The Green is a beautiful, luxurious venue and was the perfect spot for Chris and Alison’s runaway wedding with their two girls.

Here’s their elopement love story…

What made you decide to elope?

Chris proposed after 8 years together (finally!) But deciding when and where to have our wedding was becoming more and more complicated, trying to please everyone and still keep to a strict budget. We booked and cancelled at least two venues before we decided that the most important thing was for us to ‘be married’ and to be a complete family. Chris wasn’t that keen on a huge wedding anyway and I quite like the romance of eloping! The Green kept popping up as we searched for inspiration and we decided to just do it! The date we chose was 10 years after our first date. Just us and our girls, Heidi and Harriet.

Was your elopement easy to plan?

It was all relatively easy to plan. We booked a date, got the official stuff sorted and picked something to wear! We kept everything very simple. Absolutely nobody knew about our plans until a few days before. And we only had to tell them because we needed someone to look after our dog! Everyone was very supportive and it was more a case of ‘its about time too!’

Why did you choose The Green for your elopement?

We chose The Green from reviews and photos online. Living in Staffordshire we didn’t have time to view it beforehand, but it really didn’t disappoint. A beautiful setting that understood that an intimate wedding could be just as special as a large wedding. The little cottages and catering service all within budget was a bonus too!

What did you do after your ceremony to make the day truly special?

After the ceremony and photos the lovely ladies at The Green arranged for us to have a picnic on the lawn outside the cottage as our girls are not of the ‘sitting down for a meal’ variety. It was gorgeous! Later in the afternoon we went into Looe for a wander and a run around on the beach. It was a bit surreal and Chris and I kept saying to each other “we got MARRIED today!

The following day we returned home to tell everyone our news and then went to our caravan in Aberystwyth for two weeks.

What advice do you have for couples who would like to elope with their young children

A few people have told us they wish they had eloped. I think we were quite brave not telling anyone until the last minute as we could have upset a lot of people. Once we had made the decision to elope we were quite excited and it felt right. The girls absolutely loved ‘Marry Day’ and still talk about it a lot. The day became about us as a family as much as it was about Chris and I being man and wife. I had a fabulous day and wouldn’t change it for the world!

We’re camping in Cornwall for two weeks during the summer holidays and plan to visit Looe to celebrate our first anniversary!
