Oh my! How pretty is Katy and Mike’s elopement? Those bright florals by Twigs & Greens, beautiful makeup by Stacey Cremin and gorgeous smiley pics of them and their boys perfectly captured by super talented Emma at Freckle Photography.

I’ll let them tell you all about it…

We’re from Folkestone in Kent, but we decided to elope to Cornwall because we loved it so much on a previous holiday to Penzance.

I suppose our wedding was quite unusual in that our only guests were our sons (Lucas, 6; and Arthur, 4); Louise (Bishop, of Cosawes Barton, who made sure everything ran smoothly) and Emma (Latham, Freckle Photography). Louise and Emma also kindly agreed to act as our witnesses.

Our wedding day was low key but exactly what we wanted: after visiting the Eden Project the previous day, we wanted to recharge a little; so in the morning we spent some time exploring the grounds of our venue/accommodation (The Linhay @ Cosawes Barton), and fed the resident chickens. After a quick lunch, we got ready at our own pace (I had my hair and makeup done, which felt like a bit of a treat!) and had a very relaxed ceremony, outdoors, surrounded by woods.

After the ceremony, we headed down to the nearest beach to let the kids run around a bit (spoiler, they jumped straight into the water before even removing so much as a shoe!)

When we got back, our dinner was being prepared for us – a barbecued feast with a chocolate wedding cake to follow. The kids fell asleep on the sofa in front of a film while we chatted and finished our food. They were so relaxed, and enjoyed the day just as much as we did!

Mike: Yep. It was so relaxed! Lots of people have since commented on how stress-free it all seemed (it really was).

What were your favourite details?

Katy: The flowers were just perfect. I gave our florist, Jen (Twigs & Greens) a free reign, and she totally nailed it! Succulents, rosemary and mint amongst gorgeous wildflowers.

Mike: I really liked that the ceremony was outdoors, surrounded by woodland – the boys saw it as a bit of an adventure. Because they enjoyed themselves so much, there was no stress for us! They really loved running around the woods before (and after) the ceremony. Louise was brilliant with them too. They were particularly delighted to be invited to meet her pet guinea pigs, while we found a good spot for pictures. I know it’s ~our~ day, but it was so important for the boys to enjoy it and be part of it as well, and they absolutely loved it.

How did you find working with your photographer?

Katy: Emma put us all at ease! Mike & I both get a bit shy about having pictures taken; and, living so far away, we had no opportunity to meet any photographers before the wedding; but we needn’t have worried. Emma looked after us all very well, and we both love the resulting photos.

Mike: Emma was really friendly and easy to work with. She gave just the right amount of direction to guide us through the process.

Advice to any other couples getting married?

Katy: Everyone has a different vision for their wedding, so I suppose my advice is this: focus on your ideal wedding day. We’re both quite introverted, so our stress-free plans were essential to our enjoyment of the day. And having the boys with us, it was important to all of us that they enjoyed it too! In terms of budget, we focused on the “extras” that would make it feel special for us (like having a special meal cooked just for us – bliss!) rather than feeling obligated to fulfil a set of expectations that don’t necessarily align with our own.

Mike: embarks on a 10 minute monologue about how much he enjoyed our wedding day (when prompted for advice) oh – just elope, it was great!
