scarlet elopement cornwall

Laura & Mark’s Scarlet elopement {images by Nick Bailey}

It’s real wedding stories like this that really make me fall in love with the idea of elopements… so carefree and romantic!!

Thank you to Laura and Mark for sharing your day with us…

(and, as always, supplier links are at the bottom of the post).

The proposal

Although we are both from and live in Essex, we both absolutely adore Cornwall and have visited every year for the past 20 years.  In July 2015 – Mark (finally) proposed to me on the morning of my big 4-0 birthday!!  We had travelled down to Mawgan Porth the day before and were staying in a lovely little house overlooking the dunes and the fabulous beach there – it was our first time staying in Mawgan Porth and has since become or favourite place, being very special to us.

Where it all happened

After getting engaged in Cornwall, we very quickly decided that this was where we would like to get married, and when we discovered that you can marry at The Scarlet (another of our favourite and special places), we booked an intimate ceremony there for October 2017.  We both knew that we wanted a small intimate wedding with just the 2 of us – an elopement that later included our 2 close friends Michelle and James as witnesses.

We arrived at The Scarlet the day before our ceremony.  On the day I got ready with Michelle in our room – the amazing Stacey Cremin came to do our makeup and was just brilliant! It was really good fun, despite my pre-ceremony nerves.  The boys went for a walk along the coast path and then got ready in James and Michelle’s room.

The ceremony was held  at 12.30 in the gorgeous lounge at The Scarlet which has breathtaking views across Mawgan Porth beach, the weather had cleared a treat and the sun was shining – it was so lovely!

We had such fun on the beach having pictures taken and then afterwards I had arranged a surprise for Mark  – a camper van to take us for a jolly up the coast!  Mark was momentarily speechless by the surprise and just a tiny bit put out to find he wasn’t having his wedding breakfast until later that evening thinking he wouldn’t last that long without food! But The Scarlet, as ever, came up trumps and had packed us the most amazing picnic and we all headed up to Bedruthan Steps where Nick took some gorgeous photos, and then onto the secluded Trevose Head where we had our picnic, more bubbles and more photos!  The scenery was breathtaking – such an amazing place to spend our wedding afternoon, a relaxed and such happy, fun time was had by all of us with amazing food and great company.

We reluctantly bid farewell to Nick after this and headed back in the camper to The Scarlet where we all chilled out for a bit.  Later on we had a fantastic wedding breakfast in the restaurant – a wonderfully relaxed meal, reflecting on how special our day had been.

What they wore

I loved getting dressed up for the day and my dress was from Phase Eight.  The boys wore tails from a local tailors to us in Colchester, Essex.

Decor and florals

We didn’t have a theme, but chose buttery yellow and creams for the flowers from which we picked out yellow and cream for the boys waistcoats and ties.

I love flowers and the brilliant Ginny at Ginny’s flowers created an amazing hand tied bouquet for me, button holes Mark, James and Michelle and a wonderful table decoration.  I loved the flowers immediately on sight and my only sadness was that they don’t last forever!

The cake

A chocolate wedding cake – that’s what Mark asked for – a special one with honeycomb on the top! After stumbling over The Brownie Maid and seeing the gorgeous things they create we were sold and asked them to create something special for us and they didn’t dissapoint!  The cake was amazing, a chocolate drip cake with gold leaf, homemade honeycomb shards and more choccies donning the top – it was a work of art, tasted delicious and every last crumb was devoured with great satisfaction!

What they ate and drank

Apart from our wedding cake, all our food and drink was supplied by The Scarlet. The chef creates the most amazing meals – they never, ever disappoint!

Photography

The amazing, awesome and brilliant Nick Bailey!  He was a legend!

Although we eloped with just 2 friends, it was always very important to me to have a photographer to capture our day to have the special memories to look back on.  Nick could not have been a better choice for our Scarlet elopement and slotted in seamlessly as another friend becoming part of our most perfect day.

He arrived as we were getting ready and was such fun to have around taking photos while we were getting glammed up, before heading down to meet the boys and await my big entrance!  He captured shots throughout the ceremony, and afterwards we had canapes and bubbles on the balcony with more photos before we headed into the grounds of the hotel and down to the beach.

Honeymooning

We stayed at The Scarlet relaxing for 6 days before heading back to Essex to our wonderful home, where we spent another week chilling with our two fur babies and catching up with friends and family.

Favorite Part

All of it!!  I could not pin point an absolute favourite part, everything came together perfectly, it was seamless.  The venue, flowers, makeup, photographer, cake, campervan – it was all amazing!!

Advice to others

We eloped, and in the main all our family and friends respected what we chose to do and were happy for us – granted an elopement may not sit right with everyone, but it’s your day, it’s your wedding, it’s your marriage – so do what you want to do and don’t be swayed by what others say or think you should do.

The day will fly by, so relax and enjoy absolutely every second of it!
